Organizational Structure and Employee Development

Author: Garrick Throckmorton– Chief Product and Services Officer

The is no denying the world of work today is different than 20 years ago, and will certainly be different 20 years from now. Where have we been? Where are we now? Where might be headed as it relates to organizational structure? What impacts do structural changes have on our talent management strategies?

Decades ago, organizations depended upon central headquarters with 7+ levels of hierarchy to direct activities. Today, organizations have continued their movement towards flattening the hierarchy to fewer levels. Fewer levels have created a dramatic impact on the speed at which employees must develop in order to make the “larger jumps” from one level to the next. With the onset of Artificial Intelligence, and instant access to digital knowledge repositories, the prior time dependent development horizons have been reduced resulting in younger and younger executives taking the reins.

However, there will always be a critical component of development that IS time dependent and not impacted by organizational structural change; emotional intelligence. As Bob Eichinger shares in this excerpt from the 12 Geniuses Podcast, “Of the arrows in the executives quiver, the last to develop is emotional intelligence.” Listen to this 3-minute podcast excerpt to hear more about the future of organizational structure and consider its impact on your talent management planning today.
